Butter squishy guide

How to make your butter template

The butter template is a boxy build. Crisp scoring and a light fill give it neat corners while keeping the finished block soft-looking.

Beginner - about 30 minutes

Get these ready

  • *A4 printer paper or light card stock (90-120 gsm)
  • *Child-safe scissors
  • *A ruler and a blunt scoring tool, such as an empty pen cap
  • *Clear tape or double-sided tape
  • *A small amount of tissue paper or soft scrap paper for filling

What to put inside

Use loosely crumpled tissue, concentrating a little more in the centre than the corners.

What to stick with

Use double-sided tape or a glue stick on the marked tabs, then reinforce the outside corner seams with clear tape.

  1. 1

    Print and score

Print the wrapper and end-cap pieces at 100%, then gently score every dashed fold line.

  2. 2

    Cut the outer outline

Cut around the solid lines and keep all glue tabs intact.

  3. 3

    Pre-fold every panel

Fold each panel inward along the scored lines before adding any tape or glue.

  4. 4

    Join the long seam

Make the rectangular body first by joining the long wrapper seam with double-sided tape or a glue stick.

  5. 5

    Add filling and end caps

Add a small amount of tissue through one open end, then attach the end tabs one at a time.

  6. 6

    Reinforce the corners

Use short clear-tape strips over the outside corner joins for a tidy butter-block shape.

Print note: Print at 100% scale. Score fold lines with a blunt tool before cutting the end tabs.

Finish it: Do not overfill the ends. A little empty space lets the block keep its clean rectangular silhouette.

Use scissors with adult help when needed. Keep filling light and dry: do not use food, liquid, rice, beads, or anything heavy inside a paper squishy.
